WOMEN fleeing a violent partner often leave with little or nothing financially. That is why a conference taking place at the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle today is looking at how domestic violence workers, along with financial advisers, can help women out of the financial hole in which they are often left.

According to recent British Crime Survey figures, one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, some on a number of occasions and often alongside psychological abuse.

In the North East, there are 17 organisations offering refuge accommodation which jointly provide 50 separate houses for survivors of domestic violence.
