World Day of Social Justice

MANILA, Philippines - To encourage support for international efforts in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment, gender equality, and justice for all, World Day of Justice is observed on February 20 each year. Initiated by the United Nations General Assembly, the event is an excellent opportunity to focus attention on the barriers to social well being that millions of people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, or disability.

Social Justice has many different definitions based on a variety of factors like political orientation, religious background, political and social philosophy. In essence, social justice is concerned with equal rights and opportunities, not just in the courts, but in all aspects of society. The concept of social justice demands that people have equal rights and opportunities from the most marginalized to the wealthiest.

Social justice is more than a moral necessity, it is the foundation for national strength and global affluence which the world sorely needs as it continues to confront the effects of the global financial and economic conditions. …
