The Duval County School Board may be weeks if not months away from hiring a new superintendent, but it already knows how it will grade his or her performance in leading the school system.
The board has revised its evaluation tool with an eye toward being more objective, comprehensive and user-friendly.
"The old one allowed too much subjectivity ... and we wanted to make it more objective," board Vice Chairman Fel Lee said. "It's really a collaborative and mentoring tool."
At its monthly meeting Monday night, the board will hold a public hearing then vote on the proposed revisions intended to make the evaluation more flexible and fair.
The first change would eliminate the actual evaluation form from the policy itself. That would remove the need for the board to amend the policy each time it updates the evaluation criteria.
The second revision sets the evaluation parameters and procedure. It states that the superintendent's formal evaluation "will consist of both qualitative and quantitative components and will be aligned with the district's Strategic Plan."
The board will determine the components and corresponding assessment values no later than June each year. If no action is taken, then the board will use the evaluation tool from the prior year. …
