Fire sends resident of house to hospital

A house fire in southwest Eugene on Wednesday morning left one person hospitalized and caused an estimated $75,000 in damage, officials said.

Firefighters arrived at 5:12 a.m. at the house at 3789 Peppertree Drive. The fire's cause was under investigation, Eugene fire official Craig Shelby said Wednesday afternoon.

Most of the fire appeared to come from the structure's garage, Shelby said.

Of the three people inside the house at the time of the fire, only one required medical attention and was transferred to a hospital, Shelby said.

At least a dozen fire vehicles responded to the fire, with the last leaving the scene after 11 a.m.

Bank robber gets four years in prison

A Lane County man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for two bank robberies, one committed three days after he completed a 10-year state prison sentence for armed robbery.

Daniel Eli LaFuente, 30, pleaded guilty in July to robbing a Eugene branch of Northwest Community Credit Union on Dec. 5, 2011, and to robbing a Coburg Road branch of Key Bank on Jan. 27. LaFuente had been released from Snake River Correctional Institute on Dec. 2.

LaFuente also was sentenced to three years of postprison supervision and ordered to pay $6,344 in restitution to Northwest Community and $4,880 to Key Bank, according to a judgment signed this week by U. …
