T EESSIDE companies supported by UK Steel Enterprise are winning global recognition for the expertise they are providing to the oil and gas industry.

Fast-growing companies have secured much-needed finance from the Tata Steel subsidiary to help them develop overseas markets for services and technical expertise that includes ground-breaking software and top quality training.

Datum360, set up by Steve Wilson and Dave Mitchell in 2009, developed engineering management software that is now used by the oil and gas sector in some of the most challenging locations in the world. Already operating globally including in the UK, Norway, Malaysia and Australia, Datum360 is continuing to grow and move into new overseas markets.

"There is massive potential for us in the USA, Middle East and Brazil," said Steve Wilson. "UK Steel Enterprise stepped in with a significant financial package in 2011 when we were finding investment very difficult to secure. They supported us when we needed funding for growth and the bank was not prepared to take that risk.

"We are very grateful that UKSE had that confidence in us and it enabled us to reach a stage where we could then attract further investment from other sources," he added.

The construction of an oil rig can involve designers, engineers and construction companies from around the world and Datum360 provides the oil and gas sector with a consultancy service and the software capability to analyse and manage the information for these complex engineering capital projects.

Datum360 recently expanded into larger premises in Middlesbrough's Institute of Digital Innovation and has a growing team of 20 based in London and Aberdeen as well as on Teesside. It works with blue-chip companies including ConocoPhillips and BP and recently won contracts with Tullow Oil and DGDF Suez.

Expertise and training UK Steel Enterprise also supports a Teesside company that provides technical expertise and training to the oil and gas industries. Teesside Rigging and Lifting has installed the UK's largest purpose-built training platform in its new 6,500 sq ft centre on Stockton's North Tees Industrial Estate.
