NISSAN'S latest multi-million-pound investment in Wearside was welcomed yesterday. On a visit to the factory, Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "Congratulations should go to the workforce as it's a great vote of confidence in them. I think this year they will have produced half a million cars, which is the first time that has been done in Britain.
"You remember a generation ago the car industry was written off but the credibility of the industry has been built up here.
"The fact that new models are being built like the Infiniti which will export to world markets is a really great tribute to the industry. "Britain has made itself hospitable to big foreign investors as all the big car producers are investing here. There's also great relationships between the trade unions and the companies."
CBI director-general John Cridland said: "This news is the cherry on the cake for the UK's automotive industry in 2012, following a year of many success stories across the country. This major investment once again demonstrates the competitiveness of UK manufacturing.
"So we must build on the momentum the industry has gained this year by developing an industrial strategy that will deliver for all of our high-performing sectors in 2013. …
