Kane County Genealogical Society: The Kane County Genealogical Society meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the first-floor meeting room of the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St.

The evening's topic will be "Scanning, Organizing and Emailing Documents and Photos" presented by Larry Pepper, who will discuss photo and document scanning techniques, as well as ways to best utilize the technology in family research.

Pepper is the owner of Pepper Photography in Dundee, and has long been a member or officer of several state and local genealogical societies.

All are welcome to attend. The mission of the Kane County Genealogical Society is to gather and preserve regional historical records and serve as a countywide educational resource for those interested in genealogy.

Elgin American Legion: American Legion Post 57, 820 N. Liberty St., Elgin, hosts a variety of activities and events that are open to the public. The American Legion Hall is available for rental for any event. For details, call (847) 741-1684.

The WRMN Radio Road Shopping Show will be at Post 57 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

Stop by for its weekly Family Burger and Steak Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Or enjoy the weekly Friday Night Fish Fry from 4 to 7:30 p.m. It features your choice of haddock, perch, catfish, and shrimp with all the trimmings.

The American Legion serves lunch specials from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturdays with the exception of Saturdays when the hours may be extended depending on requests. There will be a selected menu on Mondays and Saturdays. In addition, the Legion is now serving East Side Caf pizzas, a seven-inch pizza for $3 or a 12-inch pizza for $7. Come in and try one out, or call ahead to pick up and take home, (847) 741-1684. They are now serving daily appetizers at the bar, including chicken tenders, jalape[+ or -]o poppers with cream cheese or cheddar, mushrooms, and onion rings. Appetizers will be served when the kitchen is not open. Post 57 also invites the community to bingo every Sundays starting at 1:30 p.m. with Early Bird Bingo, and regular bingo at 2 p.m. It is also offered on Fridays with Early Bird Bingo beginning at 7 p.m. and regular bingo at 7:30 p.m.

Bachelor 'N' Bachelorettes: Batavia Chapter of Bachelor 'N' Bachelorettes Square Dancing Club dances from 8 to 10:30 p.m. every second and fourth Friday. Starting in 2013, the club will meet in a new location, Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St. (Route 31) in St. Charles.On Jan. 25, Bobby Poyner of Joliet will call the square dancing and Anna and Howard Hoffman will cue the round dancing. Fox Valley Mixers Square Dance Club: On Saturday, Jan. 26, Wally Smulson and Howard Hoffman will lead the square dancing and round dances at the Fox Valley Mixers Square Dance Clubat the Baker Community Center, 101 S.
