Trade and investment links between the Philippines and the United Kingdom (UK) were boosted by the visit to the country of British Minister of State for Foreign Office H.E. Hugo Swire, on December 11-12, 2012. "The visit reinforces the growing importance we attach to the Philippines as key emerging power," said Minister Swire, who is responsible for British relations with the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Minister Swire met with President Benigno S. Aquino III to discuss various issues, including UK's role in the Mindanao peace process, and economic cooperation. He dialogued with government officials and business groups on law enforcement, migration, economic interaction, and people-to-people ties, among others.
The Philippine visit was part of Minister Swire's Southeast Asian tour, rounding off a good year in Philippines-British relations which included President Aquino's working visit to London on June 4-6, 2012, in connection with UK investments in Philippine energy sector. He signed a Joint Plan of Action with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), providing for a framework for political, economic, consular, cultural, and regional and global cooperation to boost bilateral ties. …
