Byline: Denise Raleigh Gail Borden Public Library
Many times people are taken aback by the beautiful large Prairie-style building standing proudly next to the Fox River.
It features a great deal of natural lighting and offers myriad resources in books, movies, meeting rooms, technological tools and the spectacular River Room offering both a cozy a fireplace and gorgeous river views.
The Main library is also now home to the In The Neighborhood Fresh Deli.
Likewise, the Rakow Branch on Bowes Road is stunning with its warm wood hues nestled in the wetlands. It features a popular collection, a computer cafe, Zen gardens and a small family room with a fireplace. An external DVD dispenser, one of the first in a North American library, operates during all hours of the day and night, 365 days of the year.
The building features environmentally sustainable elements such as a geothermal well system, drought-resistant native plants and grasses as well as rainwater management, maximum natural light and sensor controlled artificial lighting. It has received gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
Beyond its beautiful surroundings, we describe the library as a place "where imagination, transformation and recreation thrive, fueled by the power of community." Whether a caregiver is looking for a storytime for a toddler, a small-business owner is interviewing a client in a meeting room or a senior is bringing in a new iPad to learn how to Skype in Studio 60+, the library is the place for quality services and programs. The Bob Meadows Community Rooms have recently received a technology update to improve the video and audio experience. More than half of the library's programs are offered in partnership with community organizations.
The library is very proud of the long list of local partnerships and the successes they have generated. By opening our doors to involve so many members of the community, the library has become a catalyst for community interaction bringing approximately 1,000,000 people of all ages and cultures together through its doors annually. …
