Cuffed Girl Leads Police to Guardians

A 10-year-old girl who walked into a 7-Eleven in the middle of the night with one end of a handcuff around her left ankle led police to her guardians, who are charged with physically abusing the girl and her sister.

The girls were placed in the Seat Pleasant couple's care nearly four years ago by the D.C. Department of Human Services.

Prince George's County police yesterday arrested Vernon Darryl Cooper , 41, and Terry Delores Cooper, 31, both of the 6100 block of Drylog Street in Seat Pleasant. They are being held on $50,000 bond each.

The girl turned up at 4:40 a.m. Mondayat the 7-Eleven in the 5900 block of Seat Pleasant Drive. She told police she had been handcuffed to a pole in the home, escaped and walked to the convenience store because she was hungry, said Lt. Rick McCormick, a Prince George's County police spokesman.

"There were bruises and marks on her body that indicated more abuse," Lt. McCormick said.

A worker at the 7-Eleven called police, who went to the Coopers' house a block away and found the other girl. …
