The school board made it official yesterday: Henceforth, teachers and other adult employees shall not date or have sexual relations with Montgomery County public-school students.
By unanimous vote, the board added the prohibition to its policy against sexual harassment. After 12 weeks for public review, the board will formally adopt the provision June 11.
There already is an unwritten policy against dating, said board President Ana Sol Gutierrez, but the furor over dating in Anne Arundel County involving teacher Ronald Price and female students made it clear to many that a written policy was needed.
Price boasted on national television talk shows in 1993 about his dates and sexual relations with seven girls. He later was convicted of sexually abusing three girls and sentenced to 26 years in prison.
"It puts students at risk when the Board of Education doesn't have a policy," said Oliver Lancaster, director of the human relations department for Montgomery County schools.
