Reardon Wins Race in St. Johns

In a close runoff, John Reardon defeated Ron Sanchez yesterday

to become the Republican candidate in the Nov. 3 election for

the St. Johns County Commission District 2 seat.

Reardon, a 34-year-old former St. Augustine city commissioner,

will face Democrat Cathy Brown in the general election. Sanchez

said he would support Brown.

Reardon said in his campaign against Brown he'll continue to

focus on growth, a major issue facing not only his southwest St.

Johns district but the county as a whole.

"People are concerned here with development and how it will

affect their quality of life," said Reardon, a real estate

agent. "It has to be the right kind of development. The

southwest part of the county needs well-paying jobs."

He expressed gratitude to his family, friends and other

supporters who helped him through his campaign. He also said

he's been longtime friends with Brown "and I respect her a great

deal. It should be an interesting race."

Sanchez, 55, a building contractor, was somewhat bitter about

the loss, saying Reardon's misstatements about Sanchez's

contributions from builders' organizations affected the outcome. …
