Whatever the object of the course, an MA can prove both stimulating and challenging, while the availability of course tutors for guidance proves reassuring to those for whom the rigours of solo research are still daunting.

The choice on offer ranges from traditional topics to some of the most experimental areas of interdisciplinary study of the past. Listed here are some of the most popular MA history courses; many require one year's full-time study (but are available on a part-time basis as well) plus a dissertation, typically of 15-30,000 words. Some, particularly local history courses, are part-time only. LOCAL HISTORY

Local History is a burgeoning area, and each university can offer a unique insight into the history of its local area. Courses typically cover a wide span of history, from the Middle Ages or Early Modern period until the present day. Keele, for example, explores themes such as the effects of economic slump on the local community, while Trinity College, Carmarthen, examines the notion of bro or community in southwest Wales. Many of the courses include options on research methods and approaches to landscape history.
