Chrysalis Radio has been cleared to take over Choice FM in a pounds 6million deal.
The Radio Authority has rubber-stamped the takeover despite the fact Chrysalis also owns Midland dance station Heart FM.
The authority said while Heart's and Choice's areas overlapped, it was not likely the takeover would operate against the public interest.
But it imposed a list of conditions, apparently already anticipated by Chrysalis in its submissions to the authority about Choice, which caters for the Afro-Caribbean community in Birmingham.
There is to be an Afro-Caribbean member on the board of the station, which must have a dedicated news operation. Chrysalis has undertaken to establish an academy for the training of young radio talent in Birmingham, especially from the black community.
The authority has also insisted that Chrysalis must ensure Choice's marketing and promotional activities include involvement in black community affairs and it must conduct research about reaction to the station among the black community.
Chrysalis has also undertaken to make any changes sensitively and slowly and the station, owned by London-based Soul Media, will broadcast an evening news bulletin aimed at Afro-Caribbean listeners and specialist programmes playing gospel, soca, reggae, house and garage music. …
