Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jimmy Carter had a defiant message for those Portsmouth fans who had forgotten him when he lifted his shirt to reveal: "I'm back."
Carter was playing his first league match for Pompey since November 30, some 23 games in which Portsmouth have stormed from a relegation place to a position in the play-offs without him.
While his team-mates have taken Terry Venables' side to the brink of the Premiership, 31-year-old Carter has been languishing in the reserves.
But a mini crisis of injuries and suspensions gave the much-travelled Carter the chance to show manager Terry Fenwick that he was still around.
Carter responded by scoring the only goal of the match in the 55th minute, after a thrilling 30-yard dash. He then lifted his shirt to reveal his message to the fans.
Carter said: "I got the message printed on a T-shirt on the previous afternoon when I discovered I was back in the team. It cost me pounds 10.50 but it's worth every penny. …
