Elderly Track Standout Remembered for Zest for Life, Physical Fitness

In life, Anne Clarke of Carol Stream was never one to bow in the face of advancing years.

And after her death, friends remembered her as a model and inspiration for seniors to extend the quality and length of their lives through physical fitness.

Clarke died of natural causes at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield Monday. She was 90.

"She always had a smile, she was very encouraging to other people, and she was a positive person," said Peggy Krauch, recreation director for the West Chicago Park District.

Krauch got to know Clarke through Clarke's regular participation in the Midwest Senior Games, a regional event held yearly at West Chicago High School.

"She was an amazing woman," Krauch added. "She will be missed."

In 1996, CNN taped an interview with Clarke, then 86, at the event to feature her in a story about aging in America.

That year, Clarke competed in the 1,500-meter run and the 1-mile walk. …
