Immediately following the completion of Mid Suburban Baseball League play, the 11-year-old (full-time) Elk Grove Travelers jumped right into tournament action.
In the first round of the MSBL Tournament the Travelers were locked in a 3-3 battle through 3 innings before the Schaumburg Storm put a run across in the bottom of the fourth. That was the Storm's final run as the Travelers scored 6 unanswered runs to win the game 9-4.
The hitting stars were Matt Collins (HR, 2 singles, walk, 3 RBIs), Austin Wright (2 doubles, walk, 2 RBIs), Billy Montemayor (1B, RBI) and Austin Henke (1B, 2 walks). The pitching was handled by Austin Wright and Jay Laing.
In game two against Roselle, the Travelers quickly jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Behind the pitching of Ricky Szkorla and Brad Allen, the team hung on for a 13-5 victory. The offensive stars were Austin Wright (2 doubles, 1B, 3 RBIs), Jay Laing (2 doubles, 1B, RBI), Ricky Szkorla (1B, walk, 2 RBIs), Billy Montemayor (2B, RBI), Brad Allen (1B, RBI), Matt Collins (2 singles), Donny Carfagnini (2 singles) and Austin Henke (1B).
A victory against Elmhurst in the final game of the first round would assure the Travelers of advancing to the championship round. Outstanding pitching performances by Billy Montemayor and Austin Henke and timely hitting from Austin Wright (HR, 2 RBIs), Jay Laing 1B, RBI) and Matt Collins (1B) enabled the Travelers to win 3-2. …
