"What Women Want" has been written like a Saturday morning cartoon show.

Every thought, every observation, every obvious occurrence gets spelled out, underlined, italicized and bold-faced in this movie, so even inattentive viewers can understand what's happening.

Yet, Mel Gibson makes it all seem so smart.

Gibson, that hunk from Down Under (even though he was born in New York), stars as Nick Marshall, a Chicago ad executive and possibly the biggest male chauvinist in the Windy City.

One day he slips in the bathroom, then falls in the tub along with a hair dryer. Zap! Krizzle! Sheeks!

Next thing he knows, Nick has the power to read women's minds!

Let's stop right here and think about this. Wait! Let's not think. Otherwise the transparent plot, desperate dramatic devices and silly dialogue will get in the way of a perfectly perfect comic performance by Mr. Lethal Weapon himself. He couldn't have picked a tougher or better showcase for his famous sense of humor.

As Nick starts reading female minds, their low opinions of him shake his self-confidence. …
