A $5,000 donation to the Fremont Public Library to expand its poetry collection has caused library board members to expand their way of thinking about finding more income sources.
Kathleen Callahan, community relations coordinator at the Mundelein library, spoke with the individual who came to the library in April to make the donation.
Callahan said the individual smiled at her and said, "I am here to give you a check for $5,000 from the estate of Howard and Anita Beckler. The money is to be used for your poetry collection."
Library Director Kelly Krieg-Sigman said the staff was speechless after the donation.
"This is the largest single donation that the library received since I took over in 1995," she said.
In the past year, library officials say it has become increasingly important to the board and staff to secure other sources of income besides tax dollars. This is the rationale behind the "Give a Gift" fund-raiser each November, and efforts to investigate the availability of government and private grants. …
