Forget the days of lugging three garbage cans out to the curb in Glendale Heights.
Single-family houses are getting one 95-gallon "tote" on wheels for general garbage pickup by Browning Ferris Industries.
Village trustees this week signed a three-year contract with BFI for weekly garbage and recycling removal. For most residents, rates will stay the same for at least the next year. Single-family rates are $10.93 per month, town houses are $10.58.
People living in apartments will see a slight decrease in cost - from $8.67 to $7.37 per apartment - in buildings where there are at least 12 units. Those buildings with fewer than 12 apartments will pay $6.11 per unit instead of the $6.79 they pay now.
Trustees agreed to continue the partnership with BFI even though another contractor, Waste Management, submitted an offer that would cost residents slightly less each month.
The main difference was the number of garbage pickups offered each week. …
