Public safety agencies in Naperville are getting a big boost.
City council members Thursday tentatively approved hiring 12 firefighters and three dispatchers as part of the city's overall 1998-99 spending plan.
But the new hires didn't come without some debate.
Council members questioned fire Chief Alan Rohlfs about why he needed to hire a captain and two lieutenants along with nine firefighters to man the city's eighth fire station at Modaff Road and 75th Street. The new station will open later this year.
Hiring so many administrators seems out of line with that number of firefighters, some council members said.
But Rohlfs said the numbers are similar to what's already in the department.
