Lake Park Scores Second Behind Libertyville at Lancer Invite

Those in the know about high school gymnastics probably won't be too surprised that Libertyville opened the season with 150.5 points.

The runners-up, Lake Park, surprised even themselves Friday at the Lancer Invitational. The host school scored 145.8, surpassing its 1997 season-high.

"We made big improvements," said Lancers senior Spiro Roumpas, fifth in all-around (8.03 avg.). "Our goal was 135 and we went 145. We owe it all to Coach (Greg) Anderson. This was a great start, but it's not where you start - its where you finish. We're going to keep getting better."

No. 14 Lake Park won parallel bars (25.4) and still rings (23.2). The Lancers tied Libertyville on pommel horse (24.4).

"Our top two guys on every event had a great meet," Lake Park coach Greg Anderson said. "If our third and fourth guys keep improving the way they've been, we're going to be very tough. This is good for them. They've been working real hard."

Roumpas said the p-bars co-championship made his night. The senior also placed fifth on horse (8.6). Classmate Sean Orquiola was the horse champion (9.1).

Senior Brandon Orna placed second on rings with a career-best 9.20.

"Last year, we didn't go 145 until the end of the year," Orna said. …
