Naperville attorney Robert J. Schillerstrom became the first in the Republican race for DuPage County Board chairman Saturday.

"I decided to seek this office because, as my record of public service will bear out, I have always cared about the direction our community is taking," said Schillerstrom, who previously served on the county board. "I want to take a lead role in determining how our county government handles the growth which is rapidly enveloping every acre of DuPage."

So far, he is the sole contender, though board members Michael R. Formento and Patrick J. O'Shea are expected to make an announcement soon. Neither Formento nor O'Shea could be reached for comment Saturday.

Other names being circulated for the county's top seat include county Treasurer John Novak, Elmhurst Mayor Tom Marcucci and Cindy Cronin Cahill, sister of state Sen. Dan Cronin.

Schillerstrom is a former DuPage County prosecutor and two-term DuPage County Board member and forest preserve commissioner. He also served as the president of the Naperville Park District board. …
