The search is on for volunteers willing to wear their walking shoes to fight hunger.

A rally for organizers and recruiters of the annual Lombard and Villa Park CROP Walk will take place 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 215 S. Lincoln, Lombard.

Suzanne Sandy, one of a 12-member committee organizing the walk to help fight hunger, said this year's goal is to have 450 people participate in the Oct. 13 event.

"Usually, we have 300 to 350 walkers raise about $20,000 in pledges," Sandy said. "With 450 walkers, we believe we can reach a goal of $30,000."

Sandy said 25 percent of the proceeds from the walk will benefit local charities, including three PADS shelters in Villa Park and Lombard.

The remaining 75 percent of the collected monies will be sent to Church World Service headquarters in Elkhart, Ind., national sponsors of the CROP walks. Those dollars will be targeted for national and international projects. …
