Builder Says Island Lake May Have Killed His Plans

A developer proposing a shopping center at Island Lake's east entrance said conditions the village has set as part of the project's approval won't let him start work until spring, and might threaten the project altogether.

The village board this week voted 4-2 to grant final approval to Arlington Heights builder Bennett P. Trapani's plans for 15 units, a bank, parking and a drainage area along Route 176, south of the Westridge subdivision and west of Westridge Drive.

But before Trapani can start moving dirt, the board wants the village engineer to approve final engineering plans and have the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission review drainage plans. The board also wants Trapani to submit a letter of credit guaranteeing various aspects of work would be completed.

The decision was in line with the plan commission's recommendation in August.

Village Engineer Bill Blecke said his review could take four to six weeks, but he could not estimate how long the stormwater agency's review would take. …
