Metra's new North Central Service is averaging 2,000 passengers a day after its first four weeks.

Metra hopes to have 3,900 riders on the line between Antioch and Chicago by the end of next year but is pleased with its progress so far, Chairman Jeffrey Ladd said.

About one out of every 10 passengers on the North Central gets off at a stop other than downtown Chicago, Metra spokesman Chris Knapton said. Most Metra lines have only half that rate of people getting off at suburban stops, he said.

One of the most popular stops is the station next to O'Hare International Airport, where about 50 people are getting off a day, Knapton said. The North Central is the first commuter rail line to serve O'Hare.

"I think it's the biggest sleeper in the whole project," Ladd said.

Many riders also get off at the Buffalo Grove stop, which is near business and industrial parks, Knapton said. …
