Teenagers Spend Day at Village Hall

Three high school students got a chance to see something of Mount Prospect they knew little or nothing about - village government.

The three participated in the village's first Youth in Government Day recently. They followed members of the village staff around during a typical day at the office.

Luke Figiel, a Wheeling High School senior, followed Police Chief Ronald W. Pavlock; Jonathan Pluskota, a Wheeling High School senior, followed Finance Director David Jepson; and Alison Helin, an Elk Grove High School junior, shadowed Village Manager Michael E. Janonis.

The students said they were unaware of the role that village government plays in the lives of residents.

"There's more to local government than I thought," Pluskota said. "It's much more detailed and curved toward citizens than state and local government."

Janonis said the day was held to show students, who normally only hear about state and federal government, what it takes to run a village.

"For a first time out I think it was pretty good," Janonis said. …
