"Love Letters" (the play) is a labor of love for its two stars. Dr. Bill Rutenberg, a Long Grove pediatrician, and Dr. Laura Greene, a Lincolnshire psychotherapist, will don their non-equity actor hats when they appear at the Northwest Suburban JCC in Buffalo Grove, in an 8 p.m. June 1 benefit performance of the A.R. Gurney play.
The one-night-only production will raise money for scholarships for JCC day care, summer camp and other children's programs.
The play chronicles more than 50 years in the lives of two fictional characters who carry on a touching correspondence beginning in the 1930s, in second grade, and continuing through the late 1980s.
"Their lives are inextricably intertwined," says Greene, 45. "They have a bittersweet, lifelong relationship that gradually unfolds from what is written and what is left unsaid."
A veteran of numerous community productions, Greene discovered her interest in performance in 1977, in the course of her professional work, conducting seminars for corporations. Until that time, she'd been reluctant to even speak in front of large groups. …
