Woodfield Shopping Center's status as a huge tourist draw is unchallenged. Visitors come from all over the world for the shopping.
But what the Greater Woodfield Convention & Visitors Bureau wants to know is, what else turns on tourists?
To find out, it has contracted with Northern Illinois University to conduct an "identity survey" to help focus marketing efforts. What the visitors bureau wants to do in particular is attract more tourists, both the national and international variety.
"The purpose of the survey is more than identifying attractions," said Greater Woodfield's Amy Egolf. "It's trying to get a feel for the area and come up with customs and traditions and all sorts of things."
Egolf, who is now director of tourism within a newly created tourism department at the visitors bureau, said that could mean focusing on attractions like the Schaumburg Park District's Volkening Heritage Farm, a re-creation of an 1880s farm that harkens back to the village's Germanic formative years. …
