With first-year quarterback Steve Stenstrom struggling at times through recent minicamps, the Bears are close to signing veteran quarterback Dave Krieg this week to a one-year contract worth about $400,000.
The Bears were expected to wait on signing a backup until after June 1 when salary-cap cuts are likely to put additional veterans on the market.
But Bobby Hebert agreed to terms Monday with the Atlanta Falcons and few other quality, affordable backups are expected to come on the market. So the Bears have decided not to gamble by waiting.
Krieg offers the Bears a proven backup behind starter Erik Kramer, the only NFL quarterback to take all of his team's snaps in 1995. Stenstrom is expected to remain No. 2 on the depth chart and get the majority of practice time for development purposes.
The 16-year veteran, who holds the NFL record for most fumbles, would be an easy fit into the Bears' system. …
