MORTUARY MAN 'STOLE RINGS FROM OAP BODIES' Porter Denies Theft Claims

A HOSPITAL porter has been accused of stealing rings off the fingers of two pensioners as they lay dead in a mortuary.

Derek Johnston, 23, is accused of removing four rings from the fingers of 87-year-old Janet Russell and 91-year-old Jane Kilgour.

Yesterday, Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard how Johnston, who denies the charges, had just finished a night shift at the town's Victoria Hospital when it was discovered the rings were missing.

Policeman John Chalmers told the court he was called to the hospital last June to investigate the missing rings. He said: "I was asked to search the mortuary but couldn't see any sign of the rings.

"I was then asked to look at the body in the undertaker's and I noticed there were marks on the middle and ring fingers of one of the deceased which would suggest she normally wore rings."

Details of rings and other personal effects were recorded by nurses who washed the bodies of the two women, the court heard. …
