Decking the doors to homes and businesses in festive finery can net Geneva residents and businesses a chance to win $500 this holiday season.
The sixth annual Doors of Geneva competition, conducted by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, challenges residents and business owners to add more holiday twinkle to the town's already-festive decor.
Robin Albright of 119 Kane St., winner of last year's residential category, has a few tips for residents considering entering this year's competition.
"Anybody can do it," said Albright, who combined fresh and artificial fruit with holiday greens to grab last year's top honor.
"Just look through magazines and pick an element in there that you like. Park in front of your house and look at it. Think, 'How can I incorporate this into my house and make it work?'"
Albright's best advice?
"Just take the step. Everybody can be creative," she said. "I think sometimes you have to have a bit of confidence in ourselves and just try it.
"If we get caught up in the fear element we don't move. You just have to take that first step and not be immobilized by the fear."
Basing her design around fresh fruit, Albright started by placing her greens around the door and then laid all other elements on the floor to see how they fit together.
"I knew I wanted to do fresh fruit, but I wasn't sure how I should use it; like how to rig up a pineapple," she said. …
