SUPPORT is growing for a new skills council covering all aspects of the motor industry.
"The Retail Motor Industry Federation's lead in driving forward plans to establish a new Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the motor industry has been enthusiastically endorsed by other key industry trade associations, manufacturers and organisations, " said John Bond-Smith, president of the RMI.
At a meeting chaired by Ian McAllister, chairman of the Ford Motor Company - plans were agreed to propose to Government a motor industry Sector Skills Council which will build on the successful achievements of the Motor Industry Training Council, the industry's current National Training Organisation.
He said, "A motor industry SSC will accommodate a separate initiative led by the Retail Forum, a group of manufacturers and dealers focusing on business improvement and the development of people through training within the industry.
"Additionally, within the structure of the SSC, it will be critical to ensure a key role for specialist sectors and small-to medium-sized businesses, and to recognise the overriding need of the industry to control its own training."
The new Sector Skills Councils will replace National Training Organisations from the end of March, and will aim to be the main way in which employers can influence the skills agenda:
Their goals will include anticipating future needs, improving productivity and increasing learning opportunities.
