Costco Proposal Backed by Naperville Planners

A new Costco Warehouse in south Naperville won the support of the plan commission Wednesday, moving forward a development years in the making.

The Costco Warehouse, proposed for the southeast corner of Route 59 and 75th Street, would anchor an 88-acre commercial development on land owned by the estates of candy heiress Helen Vorhees Brach and the late Hazel Brodie.

Legal battles with a neighboring private airport and a condemnation suit filed by the DuPage County Forest Preserve District had tied up development of the site for several years. Naperville officials helped broker a deal by proposing the use of sales tax incentives from the Costco Warehouse to offset the cost of 63 acres to expand Springbrook Prairie.

Developers plan a 148,663-square-foot, one-story Costco Warehouse at the corner of Route 59 and 75th Street. Costco is a membership club warehouse, in which customers pay an annual fee to shop for discounted merchandise. …
