THE American gesture of having four US soldiers carry nurse Ediborah Yaps coffin to her grave in Basilan was appropriate and admirable. Yap was a heroine not by trying to protect the Burnham couple against the crossfire at the time of her and Martin Burnhams death, but to protect the Burnhams against disease and death by nursing their ailments while the couple and she were being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf. It would have been more fitting if two were Filipino soldiers to show regrets for the failure to rescue her alive.

The NBI should explain to the satisfaction of Kay Torres, the late Nida Blanca's daughter, why they could quickly find clues as basis to investigate Sen. Ping Lacson on offenses he had allegedly committed, but had delayed till now, and is still sitting on, the murder case of her mother. Unless such explanation is made, not only Kay, but even the public, especially those who sympathize with Lacson, may suspect that some incentives may have been given the NBI to fast track the investigation on Lacson. And let the Nida Blanca case rot in oblivion.
