THE American gesture of having four US soldiers carry nurse Ediborah Yaps coffin to her grave in Basilan was appropriate and admirable. Yap was a heroine not by trying to protect the Burnham couple against the crossfire at the time of her and Martin Burnhams death, but to protect the Burnhams against disease and death by nursing their ailments while the couple and she were being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf. It would have been more fitting if two were Filipino soldiers to show regrets for the failure to rescue her alive.
The coalition of Senators Loren Legarda, Juan Flavier, and Robert Barbers with the new majority augurs ill for Senate President Franklin Drilon. When the Senate resumes session, if only one of the three "collaborators" casts his or her vote with the opposition to complete at least 13 votes to elect the Senate head, Drilon's presidency will be history. Even without this coalition, the Senate won't sink that easy with senators like Angara, Ople, and Pimentel steering it. So what is the collaborator's agenda in joining Angara, etc.?
The three-unit armed clash in Maguindanao, among the soldiers, MILF rebels, and elements of an MNLF contingent (Western Cotabato State Revolutionary Committee) headed by Commander Basco Tutin, who seized upon that incident to justify his war declaration against the government. The MNLF top officials are divided on this declaration. Tutin should make good his threat. If not, the MNLF should discipline him for being another wolf-crying boy, and destroying the credibility of the MNLF and all other Muslim warriors. Or "Jihad" is just a word.
The NBI should explain to the satisfaction of Kay Torres, the late Nida Blanca's daughter, why they could quickly find clues as basis to investigate Sen. Ping Lacson on offenses he had allegedly committed, but had delayed till now, and is still sitting on, the murder case of her mother. Unless such explanation is made, not only Kay, but even the public, especially those who sympathize with Lacson, may suspect that some incentives may have been given the NBI to fast track the investigation on Lacson. And let the Nida Blanca case rot in oblivion.
