IN Wales today and in times past we have and have had a multitude of exceptionally talented and commercial artists. Artists such as Kyffin Williams, Ceri Richards, Leslie Moore, John Piper, John Knapp Fisher to name but a few.
Whilst at one time their appeal has been limited to a few patrons and patriotic Welsh, they are now finding worldwide markets outside of the gallery situation and appearing on the auction market both in Wales and London. When their works are offered for sale private buyers, collectors and dealers are competing to obtain examples of their work with many finding homes in the United States, Australia and Japan, as well as their native Wales.
When assessing the value of a painting one must also take account of the subject matter and what the artist is most frequently known to have painted. For example the oil painted landscapes by Kyffin Williams are far more desirable than the watercolour figural paintings that are seen. His watercolours can range from pounds 500 to pounds 2500, whereas his oil paintings will range from pounds 3000 - 2,5000 at auction.
