North Central Wrestlers Pin Down Win vs. 25th-Ranked University of Chicago

The North Central wrestling team had a successful week. The Cardinals defeated 25th-ranked University of Chicago 27-20 last Wednesday and then placed third in the Private College Championships hosted by Lawrence University Saturday in Appleton, Wis. In the Chicago meet, they were led by Jeff Jones (141 pounds, Wheaton North), whose pin of Chicago's Ai Nguyen at 3:38 gave North Central a 21-20 lead. Shawn Beene won his 133 match by pinning Sam Kunkel at 4:00. Patrick O'Connor was a winner at 174. In Saturday's tournament, Brian Taylor won the 125 class and David Schultz came in second at 285. Jones, Beene and John Murphy (165) all registered third-place finishes.

Basketball: The men's team (6-11, 2-4) dropped a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin games last week. The Cardinals lost 72-62 at Augustana last Tuesday. Mike Wilson (Naperville Central) was high man with 18 followed by Monte Williams with 15. On Saturday, the Cardinals lost 103-95 at home to Illinois Wesleyan. Wilson led five double-figures scorers with 26 points. Others in double-digits were Josh Wesley (Neuqua Valley) with 16, Ray Vicario and Monte Williams with 14 apiece and David Johnson (Naperville Central) with 12. The women (6-9, 2-3) won at Elmhurst 61-48 last Wednesday and then dropped a home game to Illinois Wesleyan 47-44 Saturday. Carolyn Hillard led North Central against Elmhurst with 18 points. Liz Fletcher had 17 and Britt Jensen scored 12 and pulled down 12 rebounds. Fletcher was tops in scoring with 16 points against Illinois Wesleyan.

Wheaton men net two CCIW victories

The Wheaton men's basketball team (12-3, 3-1) won a pair of CCIW conference games on the road last week with a 78-73 win at Elmhurst Tuesday and a 74-58 victory against Millikin Saturday. Junior center Joel Kolmodin earned his fourth CCIW Player of the Week award of the season with 39 points and 16 rebounds at Elmhurst and 23 points and 11 rebounds against Millikin. Sophomore Jon Nielson (Wheaton Academy) was also outstanding against Millikin with 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field, including three 3- pointers.

Basketball: The Wheaton women (14-4, 3-3) split a pair of games, recording a 59-40 non-conference win over Dominican Thursday and then losing 61-47 to CCIW leader Carthage Saturday. Senior forward Jennifer Clum (Wheaton Academy) scored a career-high 24 points against Dominican. Sophomore Erin Wingerter scored 16 points and grabbed 7 boards in the loss to Carthage.

Wrestling: The Thunder wrestling team finished sixth at the nine-team Manchester College "Spartan Mat Classic" last Saturday. Seniors David Hirt (184) and Sean Collins (149) won tournament titles for the second-straight week. Junior Tony Nord (133) took second place and senior Aaron Armetta (174) placed third.

Swimming: The host Wheaton men and women beat both Carthage and the University of Chicago in a double-dual swim meet last Saturday. On the men's side, Wheaton defeated Carthage 115-83 and beat Chicago 143-31, while the Wheaton women topped Carthage 125-77 and beat Chicago 132-41. Wheaton senior John Glass won two events, taking the 100 freestyle in 48. …
