The Derry girls volleyball team was in a festive mood after winning its first Westmoreland County Coaches' Association title Saturday at Hempfield.
So much so, that after defeating Hempfield, 2-1, in the finals, the Derry players sang happy birthday to senior Brooke Wano.
Derry, which lost the first game of the best-of-three series, 25- 15, it rebounded to win the final two games, 25-8 and 15-11.
"We played well the entire day," Derry coach Brock Smith said. "This feels great. The girls needed this to build their confidence."
Derry also won Pool B play, going 7-1. Hempfield was second in the pool (5-3). Latrobe, which leads Section 1-AAA, won Pool A with a 7-1 mark. Norwin placed second at 5-3.
In the semifinals, Derry defeated Norwin, 25-9 and 25-16, and Hempfield upset Latrobe, 26-14, 16-25 and 15-13.
In Game 1 of the finals, Hempfield used a strong game from libero Caiti Pustelak and frontline players Tina Anthony, Casey Rottler, Kim Foy and Jaime Angelicchio.
"They served well, and we didn't pass well," Smith said about the game. "They played well. In the second game, we controlled the game. We started playing our game. When we do that, we're tough to beat."
Dawn Timko, Katie McBroom, Ashley Hudock and Amanda Palenchar combined to control the net for Derry in Game 2, and senior Tessa Slifka did a good job serving and placing the ball. …
