Burrell wrestling coach Chris Como doesn't want to make any bold statements abut his team, but his team did the talking for him at the Trinity Duals on Saturday at Trinity High School.
Class AA Burrell looked like the best team in the WPIAL in any classification after it smashed North Allegheny and four others to capture the tournament title.
"They're a great team, solid top to bottom," said North Allegheny coach Jamie Kyriazis after Burrell rolled to an impressive 57-8 victory. "I saw that at the Ironman Tournament. We were missing two starters (Nick Rodgers and Karl DeCiantis), but it didn't matter."
The match began at 189 pounds and Burrell raced to a 30-0 lead, thanks to wins by Derek Edwards (189) and Brian Beattie (215), pins by Lou Gardone (285), David Makara (103) and Jeremy Landowski (119) and a forfeit win by Charles Makara.
"We're battle-tested," Como said. "We've gone through a tough month, and this team is ready for anything. This proves we're a good team.
"We have a solid team. We can beat anybody when all 14 wrestlers are focused."
After Joey Waltko (125) and Andy Candiello (130) posted wins to stop Burrell's early run, veterans Shane Welsh (135) and Jordan Shields (140) took control for Burrell. …
