Tinker Air Force Base's Top Civilian Leaving for Job in Ohio

After 11 years of serving as the highest-ranking civilian at Tinker Air Force Base, Robert J. Conner, executive director of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, is leaving Oklahoma.

My new job is in Dayton, Ohio, at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, said Conner on Friday, his last day on the job in Oklahoma City. I will be the executive director for the Air Force Materiel Command, and that's a promotion for me, so I'm very excited about that.

In his position at Tinker, serving directly under Maj. Gen. Terry L. Gabreski, Conner had been responsible for depot maintenance and supply management. His duties will be expanded in his new role.

I have the responsibility really at the headquarters for assisting the commander in all aspects of the operations of Air Force Materiel Command, Conner continued. It's a big operation, too. It's 10 different centers around the country and involved with research and development, acquisition, testing and sustainment of the different systems that are used by the United States Air Force.

Born and raised in Indiana, Conner was attending Indiana University when he began a relationship with the military. At that time, the Air Force Logistics Command headquartered at Wright- Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, was recruiting at Indiana University, so I was hired in to Air Force logistics command back in 1974 - 30 years ago yesterday, as a matter of fact. So that's how I started my federal career.

Conner came to Tinker in 1993. Actually, I was selected for the senior executive service, so I came here for a promotion, he said. Prior to that, Conner was associate director of the aircraft management directorate at the Sacramento Air Logistics Center, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif. …
