WAFTING softly just beneath the raging hype that currently surrounds Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys is the sound of another dead cert from Yorkshire.
Soulful Leeds singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, 26, is being tipped for success so widely that she appeared on Jools Holland's show before releasing a single, and this month topped an influential BBC web poll of future stars. The same survey has previously picked out bright young things such as Kaiser Chiefs, 50 Cent and the Scissor Sisters, all of them now multimillion sellers.
At her largest London show to date, she seemed braced for her inevitable success but still refreshingly excited about it. She grinned constantly and waved to her two sisters in the audience during a 10-song set that was so short simply because her band have not yet rehearsed any more tracks.
