Alan Johnson v David Willetts Ground: Commons Kick-off: 2.30pm IT WAS all a bit surreal as the Tories and Labour loyalists prepared to defeat the Labour backbench rebellion against the education Bill. New Education Secretary Mr Johnson recently heaped praise on Mr Willetts, his Tory shadow, while Leftwing colleagues fumed. It was a good day for both men.
Labour whips said Mr Johnson had proved effective in talks with MPs. Mr Willetts widened the gulf between Tony Blair and Labour MPs while avoiding cries of hypocrisy. The PM looks certain to get his reforms, but at a price.
Score: Johnson 1, Willetts 1
