James A. Maritz Jr., a prominent businessman, died Saturday (Oct. 22, 1994) at his home in Ladue after a long illness. He was 72.
Mr. Maritz was an executive officer at Maritz Inc. for 37 years. His grandfather, Edward F. Maritz, founded the firm 100 years ago as a jewelry manufacturing company. Today, Maritz Inc., based in Fenton, is one of the nation's largest employee-motivation companies, offering training, travel and communication services for corporations.
Mr. Maritz retired from Maritz Inc. in June 1983 as chairman and co-chief executive officer. In 1986, he sold his stock holdings to the company.
In 1988, Mr. Maritz started Warson Group Inc., a company based in Clayton that specializes in importing and distributing footwear. He retired from there in 1993.
A native of St. Louis, Mr. Maritz grew up in Clayton. He graduated from John Burroughs School in Ladue in 1940. In 1943, he graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., where he was president of Kappa Alpha fraternity.
