Dear Open Mind: I have been reading your column since moving to St. Louis several years ago and find it very educational and enlightening. I would like information about your association, such as what other services do you offer and do you have trained therapists on staff?
The Mental Health Association was founded in 1909 by Clifford Beers, who suffered from a serious mental illness. Our local association was founded in 1947. The Mental Health Association is a voluntary health agency concerned with all aspects of mental health and mental illness. Our mission is to promote mental health, to prevent mental illness and to work for the improved care and treatment of the mentally ill.
Our programs fall into four categories: Community Service, Volunteer Patient Service, Public Education and Professional Education. Within these categories we carry out programs that support our overall mission as described below:
- Community Service - We conduct community needs assessments to determine the needs of the St. Louis area for mental-health service. We have operated the Mental Health Partnership for Disasters, which was instrumental in coordinating mental-health services during the floods of the past two years. We operate a Self-Help Clearinghouse and publish a self-help directory, and we provide consultation and program review for other mental-health agencies. …
