Alderman Freeman Bosley Sr. may have to pay at least $7,300 in overdue taxes on property he used rent-free for a mattress factory if he is to keep using the property.
The city's Land Reutilization Authority board also decided Wednesday that the agency's staff would determine who was the owner of the property before the agency assumed ownership. If Bosley is found to be the owner, he will have to pay the city's back taxes.
Bosley, D-3rd Ward, appeared before the agency board Wednesday to say he did not own the building where his Mattress Factory is located before the agency took over the property.
The agency took over the property in 1993 for nonpayment of taxes. Bosley told the commission that the property, at 4255-57 North 20th Street in his ward, was owned by his father's mattress company, Pres-Alma Corp., and that he was not a shareholder.
The board Wednesday ordered the agency's staff to research the ownership of the property, said Michelle Duffe, the agency's director of real estate.
Bosley "said he was never a shareholder," Duffe said.
