WHAT DAY is it today? Monday, yes, Monday. Well done. Anything else? Not according to my English-designed and English-published diary. Today is, of course, St George's Day, the day of England's patron saint, a day on which the English traditionally... traditionally... do what? Do nothing.

My diary lists Australia Day as 26 January. Canada Day is 2 July. The French celebrate Bastille Day, and the Americans Independence Day. But the English celebrate their national day without parades, fireworks or patriotic speeches. In truth, the English celebrate their national day in a manner thoroughly in keeping with the most subtle and sophisticated sense of humour in the world. …
