WHAT DAY is it today? Monday, yes, Monday. Well done. Anything else? Not according to my English-designed and English-published diary. Today is, of course, St George's Day, the day of England's patron saint, a day on which the English traditionally... traditionally... do what? Do nothing.

My diary lists Australia Day as 26 January. Canada Day is 2 July. The French celebrate Bastille Day, and the Americans Independence Day. But the English celebrate their national day without parades, fireworks or patriotic speeches.
