Delight in them or deride them, there is nothing in all of world cinema quite like the films of Jean-Luc Godard (ocular justification of this dogmatic statement is now on show at the National Film Theatre); and there is nothing within the large and various Godard oeuvre quite like the seven films he made in the early 1960s with his girlfriend, his wife, his muse, his amour fou, his greatest personal subject, Anna Karina. "Seven and a half," she corrects me gently, referring to the science- fiction short Anticipation: "We always say seven and a half..." - laughter - "because Fellini did 81/ 2!"
