Local Firms Represent Nearly Half of Largest Metro Manufacturers

About half of the metropolitan area's largest manufacturing employers are based in the Oklahoma City area, with the remainder with their headquarters outside of the state.

Information for the list of the largest manufacturing employers in the Oklahoma City area was provided by individual firm's responding to a mail and telephone survey by The Journal Record and by Manufacturer's News Inc.'s Oklahoma Manufacturers Register 1994 which lists at least the name of the company, location, telephone and fax, number of employees and items manufactured.

The two largest employers in the city are General Motors Corp. Oklahoma City Assembly Plant with 4,700 local employees, with headquarters in Detroit, and AT T Network Systems with 4,000 employees, which has its base in Basking Ridge, N.J.

General Motors entered the Oklahoma City area in 1979 and operates its plant at 7447 SE 74th St. where Buick Century and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera autos are made. It has a local payroll of $196 million.

AT T Network Systems was established in the city in 1957 and is now located at 7725 W. Reno Ave. It has 4,000 local employees with a payroll of $200 million.

LSB Industries Inc. is the largest locally based manufacturing firm listed and is third overall in the number of employees in the Oklahoma City area. It has 1,700 employees here and 2,400 nationwide. Jack E. Golsen is the top executive at the firm which manufactures chemicals, air-conditioning equipment, automotive and industrial parts.

The Dayton Tire plant, which manufactures passenger and light truck tires primarily for the replacement market, employs 1,600 people with a local payroll of $100 million. …
