Engineering Information, Inc. (Ei) and Community of Science, Inc. (COS) have announced their agreement to crosslicense information of interest to the engineering community and make it available through their respective organizations.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ei will offer subscribers to its Ei Village searchable access to a database of experts in engineering and applied physics derived from COS Expertise, a leading online resource for first-person information about ongoing research in academic and government institutions. In addition, Ei Village customers will have access to a customized version of the U.S. Patent Citation database published by COS, with all patents issued since 1971. The new services are expected to be available to Ei Village residents this spring.

Separately, COS will offer searchable access to Ei Compendex, a comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database, as a premium service on the COS Web site. Ei Compendex includes over 3 million summaries of journal articles, technical reports, and conference papers and proceedings. Subscriptions to this important engineering resource will be available with the COS interface on the World Wide Web beginning this month.

Huntington Williams, III, president of COS, said, "A key element in this agreement is our ability to connect the first-person profiles in COS Expertise with citation information in Compendex Plus. The result, we believe, will be an unparalleled tool for research via the Web."

"We're very pleased to be entering this innovative relationship with COS," said Ei CEO and president, John J. Regazzi. "Their resources further expand the functionality of Ei Village to its subscribers, extending our concept of giving residents access to a wide range of individuals with expertise in the various fields of engineering for collaborative or consultative purposes. …
