Breltkopf & Härtel has released a newly revised version of three character pieces composed by Clara Schumann. These pieces, Three Romances for Violin and Piano, Op.22, demonstrate the widely overlooked abilities of this woman as a gifted composer.
Breitkopf first published an edition of this work in January of 1856. Though the first edition is honorable, a recent comparison to the original autograph reveals several omissions and inconsistencies in the articulation markings. The new edition, based on the first edition, accounts for these inconsistencies, providing a more accurate reflection of the composer's original conception of the piece.
It also boasts scarce, yet helpful, fingerings and articulations in the violin part suspected to have been provided by Joseph Joachim, a longtime violinist friend and performance partner of Schumann's. These fingerings, as well as those in the piano part, are a result of the first published edition, not the autograph.
The character and mood of each romance contrasts the next, and together they establish a wide array of emotion and personality. …
